Nounalcoholism
Related termsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Alcoholism is a term with multiple and sometimes conflicting definitions. In common and historic usage, alcoholism refers to any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages despite health problems and negative social consequences. Modern medical definitions describe alcoholism as a disease and addiction which results in a persistent use of alcohol despite negative consequences. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, alcoholism, also referred to as dipsomania described a preoccupation with, or compulsion toward the consumption of, alcohol and/or an impaired ability to recognize the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption. Although not all of these definitions specify current and on-going use of alcohol as a qualifier for alcoholism, some do, as well as remarking on the long-term effects of consistent, heavy alcohol use, including dependence and symptoms of withdrawal. While the ingestion of alcohol is, by definition, necessary to develop alcoholism, the use of alcohol does not predict the development of alcoholism. It is estimated that 9% of the general population is predisposed to alcoholism based on genetic factors. The quantity, frequency and regularity of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism varies greatly from person to person. In addition, although the biological mechanisms underpinning alcoholism are uncertain, some risk factors, including social environment, stress, emotional health, genetic predisposition, age, and gender have been identified. For example, those who consume alcohol at an early age, by age 16 or younger, are at a higher risk of alcohol dependence or abuse. Also, studies indicate that the proportion of men with alcohol dependence are higher than that of the proportion of women, 7% and 2.5% respectively, although women are more vulnerable to long-term consequences of alcoholism. Around 90% of adults in United States consume alcohol and more than 700,000 of them are treated daily for alcoholism. "King Alcohol and his Prime Minister" circa 1820From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Is alcoholism a disease or an addiction? Q. I would like to see your thoughts on this. Some say that it s a hereditary disease some say you become addicted to it like drugs. Yes it may be different for everyone but would any of you agree that alcoholism can be hereditary? Asked by Honiss - Tue Mar 11 12:25:57 2008 - - 12 Answers - 3 Comments A. If you belong to a cult... errr... I mean AA it is a disease. If you are a rational thinking individual it is an addiction. A miss under stood addiction. Scientific studies by unbiased groups have shown that the majority of people classified as "alcoholics" are in all actuality over indulgers and show no real form of addiction. Don't get me wrong, alcoholism is real and dangerous. Over indulges is just childish behavior by adults acting as children. EDIT: The AMA recognizes it a disease... but it widely debated in the community as to whether it is or not. Answered by Mayor Adam West - Tue Mar 11 13:33:19 2008 What to do with a friend who has several alcoholism? Q. A very good friend of mine is an alcoholic (she's 26 years old). She has been for as long as i've known her and she's been to rehab, lived in halfway houses, she's been arrested for 2 DUI's (this was before I knew her). Recently, the 2 year romantic relationship she was in dissolved (they are living together). This was mostly becauses of the alcoholism - she can go into rages when she drinks and has no real quality of life outside of bars/drinking. She also works in a bar. The part where I come in (except that I desperately have wanted to help her for years and have extended support) is that now she's accusing me having an affair with her ex-significant other. Although I am hurt, more importantly I'm scared of what these accusations… [cont.] Asked by steeleskillz - Mon Oct 1 12:01:57 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Safest thing for you is to remove yourself from the situation. You can call Alcoholics Anonymous and ask for help with an intervention. They have some counselors trained , not professional mind you , but life experience stuff. Go with them and introduce them to her. Also explain you can not continue this way. Let them help as it's all different each case. Unless her family wants to help your hands are tied. If she gets violent call 911 immediately. I hate the jail idea but? Please be safe and help her next. Her husband seems to be failing her as is family. I wish I knew how to say how much it means that you care like this. Been there I guess. Q. just want to know what the public views is on alcoholism and how this affects people around the world. How do people end up alcoholics even after having success in their life. Bad childhood, wrong decision or a break a dramatic break down. Asked by davidbuckey@btinternet.com - Fri Sep 12 20:22:50 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wow, this is a huge topic. And it probably would get more responses in the health care section of YA. There used to be a lot of debate as to whether or not alcoholism was a mental illness, a character flaw, or a disease such as diabetes or Alzheimers. Today, most physicians, and certainly the AA community, believe that alcoholism is a disease. In some people, it begins with the very first drink they take. In others, it may not show up until after years of drinking. Bottom line: if you don't have the genetic (?) predisposition for the disease, you will likely not become an alcoholic. The reasons (pathways might be a better word here) for becoming an alcoholic are almost as varied as the number of alcoholics.
